It’s been a hard day (and last night was worse) here at Goober headquarters. Being friends with the ex is hard when they A lie to you about what there plans were for Saturday (the person’s house who he said he was going to a BBQ at works at the court, I saw him today and asked him about it – he said he and his wife were out of town all weekend) and then B fails to show up for the dinner plans you made Friday (and then doesn’t answer your calls or return texts). I want to be angry, but I’m just so freaking sad. I want to know what the hell is going on.
So, to cheer myself up I’m focusing on the GOOD things.
Things I’m Loving
Nice CoWorkers
I’ve been making an effort to be more social at work. Whether it’s a chat with one of the secretaries or joking around with the attorneys, I’m enjoying the nice coworkers I have and getting in some social time. My favorite attorney in the office is the only one who knows about the break-up and she has been very kind. Today we had lunch in her office after I told her there had been some drama. It was nice to such sit and eat and talk and laugh.
Starbucks Skinny Vanilla Latte’s
I was initially inspired to try something new at Starbucks after seeing The Proposal (where Sandra Bullock’s character drinks cinnamon soy lattes). I tend to find Starbucks coffee to be too bitter, but these lattes are heavenly without the calorie wallop of a whip cream topped (and yes, I always get whipped cream) mocha. And they are a variation on my usual sort of caffeine – diet coke.
Books on Tape
Over thinking gets me into lots of trouble. I have a very hard time not letting my mind wander (invariable to dark and sad places) when I drive. As a way to avoid the immediate post-break-up over thinking I turned to humorous books on tape. It’s much harder for your brain to spiral out of control in loops of sad thoughts when you’re listening to funny stories. I’ve worked my way through the entire David Sedaris and Augusten Burroughs collections, as well as some Chelsea Handler and Sloane Crosley. Thank goodness for a vast selection at the library or I’d be racking up quite the book-on-tape bill. If anyone has any other suggestions of authors to try, I’d welcome them.
Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood
This is just good fluff TV. They really seem to love each other and it makes me happy to see that, and hopeful that everyone can find that in their own life.
Whatever, Martha
I don’t usually get Fine Living Network as part of my dish package, but every once in awhile I get it for a few weeks, and when I do I tape every episode of Whatever Martha. It is just hilarious. Martha’s daughter and her friend watch clips of Martha Stewart shows and make fun of them. It’s snarky and awesome.
This American Life
I read about these NPR shows on a blog, and checked them out on iTunes. They are entertaining and fun and great to listen to on my morning walks with my dog.
The Clubhouse
The neighborhood where I live has a big clubhouse with a gym, and pool, large common rooms to hang out in, and meeting rooms. I’ve been working out here a lot and taking some classes. I’m starting to see familiar faces (including my next door neighbor), and one of these days I’m going to break out of my shy shell enough to start a conversation Next week I’m going to the Social Advisory Group to try to start a craft club. I got the idea for a Meetup.com group I saw, but was too far away for me to join. There is a mom’s club and a golf club at the Clubhouse, but I thought it would be fun to have a group where creative people in the neighbor good could get together and work on their crafts and be social.
Not Cooking
When the boy lived here I felt that I should make a proper dinner at night (well at least on the nights we didn’t get takeout), and in a way it was kind of fun. Now that it’s just me I feel no shame in eating Pirate Booty and chicken strips for dinner, or popcorn or cheese and crackers or any other random combination of food that takes very little prep time. If I want to cook I can, and if I don’t there isn’t anybody else around who cares.
Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Daily Moisturizer
I had a coupon for a 2-pack of this lotion at Costco - and I’m a sucker for a deal. This SPF moisturizer is a great pre-foundation base and I love the fact that it smells like traditional sunscreen. That smell brings back memories of ski trips and vacations and just makes me happy - definitely a good way to start your morning.
Mike’s Light Hard Lemonade
I’m not always a big fan of alcohol, mostly because I am a ridiculous light weight. This lemonade is delicious and I can drink one without feeling like the room is spinning afterwards, and only 98 calories. How delightful.
