Ah, nothing like a day off

I took today off. I had a dentist appointment and a doctor's appointment and figured I might as well take the rest of the day off. I took two classes at the clubhouse (body sculpt and zumba - both fun and not something I can normally do as they are offered during my normal work hours), stopped at Target, and just generally enjoyed not working :)

Here's Monday's semi-patriotic look. It was very comfortable. The skirt fits at my hip, but it doesn't make for the most flattering look. I have three of this same style of skirt (they were $5 Target clearance finds), and I think I'm going to try them with shirts that aren't tucked it. I think that will look much better.

Skirt - Target
Shoes - Bass

Here's the day off look. I think this photo I look more pregnant that the top makes me look in reality. At least I hope so.

I talked to my doctor today a bit about how I've been feeling mentally since the breakup. I gave her some examples of things that have been happening. She assured me that it was very normal, and that you have to try to figure out where your life is now and that it's normal to feel out of sorts. And she said if I wasn't feeling better to give her a call and she'd be happy to write me a prescription. I have to say, both of those things made me feel much better. And so, I end episode #456 of my talking about my break-up. Lovely :) Thanks for being so patient.

Everything's Going to be Alright (right?)

It’s been a hard day (and last night was worse) here at Goober headquarters. Being friends with the ex is hard when they A lie to you about what there plans were for Saturday (the person’s house who he said he was going to a BBQ at works at the court, I saw him today and asked him about it – he said he and his wife were out of town all weekend) and then B fails to show up for the dinner plans you made Friday (and then doesn’t answer your calls or return texts). I want to be angry, but I’m just so freaking sad. I want to know what the hell is going on.

So, to cheer myself up I’m focusing on the GOOD things.

Things I’m Loving

Nice CoWorkers
I’ve been making an effort to be more social at work. Whether it’s a chat with one of the secretaries or joking around with the attorneys, I’m enjoying the nice coworkers I have and getting in some social time. My favorite attorney in the office is the only one who knows about the break-up and she has been very kind. Today we had lunch in her office after I told her there had been some drama. It was nice to such sit and eat and talk and laugh.

Starbucks Skinny Vanilla Latte’s

I was initially inspired to try something new at Starbucks after seeing The Proposal (where Sandra Bullock’s character drinks cinnamon soy lattes). I tend to find Starbucks coffee to be too bitter, but these lattes are heavenly without the calorie wallop of a whip cream topped (and yes, I always get whipped cream) mocha. And they are a variation on my usual sort of caffeine – diet coke.

Books on Tape

Over thinking gets me into lots of trouble. I have a very hard time not letting my mind wander (invariable to dark and sad places) when I drive. As a way to avoid the immediate post-break-up over thinking I turned to humorous books on tape. It’s much harder for your brain to spiral out of control in loops of sad thoughts when you’re listening to funny stories. I’ve worked my way through the entire David Sedaris and Augusten Burroughs collections, as well as some Chelsea Handler and Sloane Crosley. Thank goodness for a vast selection at the library or I’d be racking up quite the book-on-tape bill. If anyone has any other suggestions of authors to try, I’d welcome them.

Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood

This is just good fluff TV. They really seem to love each other and it makes me happy to see that, and hopeful that everyone can find that in their own life.

Whatever, Martha

I don’t usually get Fine Living Network as part of my dish package, but every once in awhile I get it for a few weeks, and when I do I tape every episode of Whatever Martha. It is just hilarious. Martha’s daughter and her friend watch clips of Martha Stewart shows and make fun of them. It’s snarky and awesome.

This American Life

I read about these NPR shows on a blog, and checked them out on iTunes. They are entertaining and fun and great to listen to on my morning walks with my dog.

The Clubhouse
The neighborhood where I live has a big clubhouse with a gym, and pool, large common rooms to hang out in, and meeting rooms. I’ve been working out here a lot and taking some classes. I’m starting to see familiar faces (including my next door neighbor), and one of these days I’m going to break out of my shy shell enough to start a conversation  Next week I’m going to the Social Advisory Group to try to start a craft club. I got the idea for a Meetup.com group I saw, but was too far away for me to join. There is a mom’s club and a golf club at the Clubhouse, but I thought it would be fun to have a group where creative people in the neighbor good could get together and work on their crafts and be social.

Not Cooking

When the boy lived here I felt that I should make a proper dinner at night (well at least on the nights we didn’t get takeout), and in a way it was kind of fun. Now that it’s just me I feel no shame in eating Pirate Booty and chicken strips for dinner, or popcorn or cheese and crackers or any other random combination of food that takes very little prep time. If I want to cook I can, and if I don’t there isn’t anybody else around who cares.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Daily Moisturizer

I had a coupon for a 2-pack of this lotion at Costco - and I’m a sucker for a deal. This SPF moisturizer is a great pre-foundation base and I love the fact that it smells like traditional sunscreen. That smell brings back memories of ski trips and vacations and just makes me happy - definitely a good way to start your morning.

Mike’s Light Hard Lemonade
I’m not always a big fan of alcohol, mostly because I am a ridiculous light weight. This lemonade is delicious and I can drink one without feeling like the room is spinning afterwards, and only 98 calories. How delightful.

Hot, Hot, Hot

This weekend was brutally hot. Temps over 105 both days. Which meant I spent a lot of time inside. I refused to be under house arrest so I did some shopping, met up with a friend, and took a beaded bracelet class (through meetup.com - that is such a great website). But I can assure you I did a lot of sweating during those outings and cursed the hot weather for being so extreme my car barely cooled off a little by the time I reached my destination. A few more days of 100+ then we'll cool off to the high 90s :) With temps this high it is all about breathable cotton pieces.

Learning Lessons

There is something about blogging your fashion that really puts fashion lessons into high gear. Things that you wouldn't necessarily notice go into hyper-focus once you put them on the internet for all to see. And I think that's a really good thing.

Thursday

cardigan - Banana Republic
tee - Kohl's
pants - Limited via Marshalls
shoes - Anne Klein via TJ Maxx
belt - American Eagle via Marshalls
necklace - Kohl's

Overall I like this look. I normally wouldn't wear a belt with my pants, especially with low rise pants, but I think it really added a nice pop of color. These pants are really comfortable, but they have gotten way too big - to the point that they aren't flattering at all. I think I'm going to have to go shopping for a nice pair of more fitted black pants.

Friday

jacket - Isaac Mizrahi for Target
necklace - Kohl's
blouse - Liz Claiborne via Ross
pants - Target
shoes - Madeline via Ross

Here is a day where actually using my full-length mirror would have been good. These pants are just a bit to short for the heels (if I had hitched the pants up to my waist as they were meant to me they would have been MUCH too short - but I do love a pant that hangs lower, so much more comfortable). I like this belt, and I think worn around the waist it has an almost western feel to it - I think because of the big buckle. I think this outfit sort of works (better still with lower heels) with the jacket open - it's crap without the jacket. But that's the great thing - you try stuff, see what works, see what doesn't, and tweak accordingly.

Getting Over the Hump

I'm feeling a little better today, in all respects. Although, lately I've been having trouble sleeping. For the last couple months (you do the math) I've been taking something to help me sleep at night. Foolishly, I tried to sleep on my own Sunday night. What I did instead was wake up about every hour, pee about 10 times, and wake up with eyes that felt like sandpaper. Monday night I took something, but still slept like crap. I'm hoping tonight the fatigue will finally get the best of me and I'll sleep like a baby. If not, I already have plans to hit Starbucks on the way to work to pick up my new friend - the skinny vanilla latte.

Uninspired

I've been feeling rather meh lately about my appearance. I'm not inspired by any of my clothes and I haven't been pleased with any of my recent outfits. I feel like I generally look icky and I can't put my finger on what it is (not enough makeup? eyebrows too dark with my light hair? nothing it's just in my head?). I gained back a bit of the weight I lost so I'm feeling none-too-pleased about that. So, what I'm really saying, is that I don't feel pretty and I could use a hug.

Preppy Monday:

necklace - gift
bracelet - garage sale
skirt - Old Navy altered by mom
sweater - Target
shoes - BGBGirls via Marshalls

Tuesday comfort:

necklace - QVC
cardigan - Kohl's
skirt - QVC

Last week and last weekend - it's not too late to discuss, right?

Well, as you can tell from my posts, last week was a wee bit insane. So I'm doing a very belated update.

Weekend before last my sister and I got pedicures. I've only had a handful of pedicures in my life, so I get very excited about it.

That same weekend I got my hair trimmed and colored (extra blond for summer). I also realized I have a pair of bermuda shorts that fit (after sitting in my closet for 3 years). Cross that off my shopping list.

cardigan - Nordstrom Rack
tank - Ross

shoes - Sam & Libby

And finally here are some outfits from last week.
